Deutsche Telekom said its partnership with CipherCloud will improve the security posture of its corporate customers

Deutsche Telekom and cloud security firm CipherCloud announced a partnership Wednesday that will see the German telco move to deploy servers running the CipherCloud encryption gateway, which will be offered as a service to enterprise cloud customers through its IT-focused subsidiary T-Systems.

The initiative, which is being funded by Deutsche Telekom’s venture capital subsidiary T-Venture, will see T-Systems roll out its own hosted version of the CipherCloud gateway, which funnels data being uploaded to cloud platforms through a proxy that applies AES 256-bit encryption to that data. Decryption is performed only when an authorized employee retrieves the data from the cloud and the data has been returned.

Deutsche Telekom said the offering, which will be demoed next week, will enhance the security posture of its corporate customers.

Germany has among Europe’s strongest data privacy and data residency policies and Deutsche Telekom’s latest move follows similar moves to double down on data protection.

In August last year – at the height of the Snowden revelations saga – Deutsche Telekom announced that the company would avoid US servers. German businesses were “deeply unsettled” about the allegations, it said.
